If you’re visiting Washington, DC or are a local looking for reliable, hearty fare with a creative touch, Founding Farmers is a classic go-to. With several locations across the DMV area, this farm-to-table restaurant has become a staple in the DC dining scene. Whether you’re stopping in for lunch, dinner, or weekend brunch, expect familiar comfort food made with a thoughtful, elevated approach.
We recently visited the Founding Farmers location in Foggy Bottom, just a few blocks from the White House, and here’s how it went.
A Meal That Balances Nostalgia and Creativity
Founding Farmers has a cozy, bustling vibe that feels welcoming for tourists and locals alike. The menu focuses on American comfort food with responsibly sourced ingredients. Many of the dishes are made in-house, including their sodas, desserts, and even candies.
Beef Au Jus Sandwich
The highlight of the meal was the Beef Au Jus Sandwich. Perfectly toasted bread, tender beef, and a rich, savory jus made this sandwich stand out. It was simple but perfectly executed. Highly recommended if you’re unsure what to order.
Caesar Salad with Seasoned Chicken
The Caesar Salad itself was pretty standard, but the seasoned grilled chicken on top was a surprise hit. It was juicy and well-seasoned. The cornbread croutons were the real star. Slightly sweet and just the right amount of crunch, they elevated the dish.
Deviled Eggs
This appetizer had an unexpected twist. Instead of the classic deviled egg filling, these were stuffed with egg salad. It was a creative take and a house signature. Not my personal favorite, but worth trying if you’re into egg salad.
Housemade Orange Soda
My husband ordered the orange soda, which tasted like a mix between fresh orange juice and soda water. It was light, citrus-y, and refreshing without being overly sweet. A great non-alcoholic choice.
Cheesecake and Candy
We ended the meal with a slice of cheesecake, which was just what I had been craving. Creamy and satisfying without being too dense. Before leaving, take a peek at the house made candy options. It adds a fun, nostalgic touch to the whole experience.
Final Thoughts
Founding Farmers is one of those places you can confidently recommend to anyone visiting the city. The menu has something for everyone and the atmosphere feels casual yet thoughtful. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, it’s an easy choice for comfort food that doesn’t feel boring.
We have been here before and always enjoy trying something new. A few of our past favorites are chicken and waffles of the braised short rib. It was a little to hot out to enjoy these heavier classics. But if you are in town during the fall or winter check them out!
If you’re looking for a brunch in Arlington that feels a little more elevated, a little more shareable, and a lot more delicious, The Liberty Tavern is a must. Their small-plate brunch format transforms a typical weekend meal into a curated, communal dining experience. It is perfect for couples, friend groups, or families who want to try a little of everything.
A Tapas-Style Brunch That Delivers
Unlike your typical eggs-and-toast brunch, Liberty Tavern in Clarendon offers small plates and larger shareable entrees, more reminiscent of tapas than traditional breakfast. The format encourages ordering multiple dishes and trying a wide range of flavors, and it works well.
The menu is divided between brunch tapas (single-portion plates) and larger dishes designed to serve four or more. You can build your own tasting experience, repeat your favorites, and still feel like you’re discovering something new by the end of the meal.
The Liberty Tavern also offers A La Carte Brunch for parties less than 8.
Our Favorite Dishes at Liberty Tavern Brunch
We tried quite a few plates between the two of us, and here’s what stood out.
Steak Bites (Order Multiple)
These are single bite plates, but incredibly flavorful. Perfectly cooked and well-seasoned, they were so good we ordered more the second our waiter got back. If you’re coming hungry or with company, consider ordering a few rounds from the start.
Tomato Soup and Grilled Cheese
This comforting combo hit all the nostalgic notes with a grown-up twist. The soup was rich and flavorful, and the grilled cheese had the perfect crunch and gooey center. It’s a strong contender for best overall dish.
Quiche
Soft, savory, and cooked just right. The quiche was light enough not to overwhelm, but packed with flavor in each bite. A solid choice for both egg lovers and those who typically skip over it.
Grits
Surprisingly excellent. I’m a fan of grits, but my husband usually isn’t. These were so good, even he liked them. Creamy, well-seasoned, and just the right texture. A great example of a simple dish done exceptionally well.
French Toast
Of all the sweet options, the French toast was the standout. Not overly soggy or overly sweet, just a well-balanced plate that felt intentional and well-executed. Some of the other sweet dishes leaned a bit too sugary for my taste, but this one stood out.
Alcoholic Drinks
Everyone wants to know about the drinks when it comes to a bottomless brunch. Here at The Liberty Tavern they are an excellent deal, 15$ for unlimited 25 cent drinks. There is a wide range of drinks that are included in the quarter deal. Some of the options are classic mimosas, spiked strawberry lemonade, and miller lite for the beer drinkers.
Ideal for Groups and Foodies
Liberty Tavern’s brunch is a great pick if you:
Enjoy trying a variety of dishes instead of committing to one
Are dining with a group and want to share everything
Appreciate high-quality ingredients and thoughtful preparation
The larger plates, meant for four or more people, round out the experience nicely if you’re coming with a bigger party. Think family-style entrees that make the table feel abundant and festive.
Ordering Tips for Liberty Tavern Brunch
Want to get the most out of your brunch?
Order in waves. Start with three to four small plates, then build from there.
Double up on any dish you’re excited about, especially the steak.
Mix savory and sweet, but lean savory unless you know you love the sweet options.
Brunch Hours
Check The Liberty Tavern’s website or Instagram for current hours, but typical brunch service runs Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
Liberty Tavern has easily earned a spot on our go-to Arlington brunch list. The small-plate menu makes for a playful, shareable, and satisfying way to spend a weekend morning. Whether you’re local or visiting the DC area, it’s a brunch worth experiencing.
